FREE RUBIK'S CUBE TUTORIAL
Learning to solve the Rubik's cube seems like it would be super difficult.
The SECOND biggest secret in the cubing community: it's actually really easy to learn. All you need is a couple of hours, a practice cube and an internet connection.
The BIGGEST secret is: it's really not worth it.

Birthday Calculator
Here's a step-by-step breakdown of working out what day of the week any date in history was or will be in the future. Again: it's not worth it.
01
Counting to 7
We're going to have a running total of a number. Any time the number gets to 7, we take away 7.
So eg. 18? Minus 7 is 11.
(Still more than 7, so:) minus 7 again = 4.
Every day of the week is assigned a number 1-7, so 4 would be Thursday. Easy.
02
Breaking Down the Date
The date can be broken down into five different numbers: The Day, The Month, The Year, The Decade & The Leap Year.

eg. 21 Oct 1991
The Date = 21
The Month = October
The Year = 1 (the final digit of 91)
The Decade = 90s
The Leap Year = we'll get to that...
For Month, Decade & Leap Year, we'll need to do some remembering.
But 2 of these numbers (The Year and The Day) are taken at face value, so we keep a running total of these.

For the take of our total, 21+1=22
- 7 = 15 - 7 = 8 - 7 = 1

You can do all the subtraction at the end. I find it easier to keep a smaller number in my head.
03
Month & Decade
The month and decade both have key numbers associated with them.
There isn't really a workaround for remembering these aside from just remembering them. If you use anything resembling the Major System, this is a really good use for it.
January = 6
February = 2
March = 2
April = 5
May = 0
June = 3
July = 5
August = 1
September = 4
October = 6
November = 2
December = 4

Decades have the same, but it's easier to remember without a system. I'm going to explain using the 1900s, but it's easy to convert backwards & forwards.
1900s: 1
1910s: 6
1920s: 5
1930s: 3
1940s: 2
1950s: 0
1960s: 6
1970s: 4
1980s: 3
1990s: 1

For anything 2000-2099: -1
For 2100-2199: +4
For 1800s: +2
For 1700s: +4
If in doubt, ask Siri the day of the 7th of May in XX50 of that century.
In my experience, most people you ask will be born 1930-2010. Focus on those to begin with.

So for our total:
Date + Month + Year + Decade + Leap Year = Day
21 + 6 (key for October) + 1 (from 91) + 1 (key for 1990s) + Leap Year (we'll get to it! Don't worry!)
04
The Dreaded Leap Year
Assuming you've memorised the table, this is the bit that will go wrong.
You're going to add on the number of February 29ths there have been so far in the decade.

So to make it easy-ish, the number on the left is the final digit in the year:
EVEN ODD
DECADE DECADE
0/1 +0
2/3 +0 +1
4/5 +1
6/7 +1 +2
8/9 +2

So to continue our example:
21st October 1991
Because the 90s is an ODD decade, and it ends in a 1, we +0

Kind of anticlimactic... imagine instead it was 1997.
90s: ODD decade (how true...)
7 in an ODD decade = +2

But for our example: 21st October 1991
Date = 21
Month = October = 6
Year = 91 = 1
Decade = 90s = 1
Leap Year = 1 in an ODD decade = +0

21 + 6 + 1 + 1 + 0 = 29

29 - 7 = 22 - 7 = 15 - 7 = 8 - 7 = 1
1 = Monday
21st October 1991 = Monday

It's a lot of work. But it's a cool thing to be able to bust out in the bar... or just ask Siri...
Down Right Incredible
by Harry Baker
Tom's 2024 show ends with a poem, which was specially written for the show by acclaimed poet & writer Harry Baker.

A HUGE thanks to Harry for his work on this, and his long term support.

We wish him nothing but success in the future. Harry is one of the good ones.
Shakespeare said: we’re merely players
And all the world’s a stage
For some of us our part is telling you
On which specific page
But from the moment you were born
(Which was a Monday by the way)
We find the stuff that lights us up
And get to have a play
It could be board games or horse racing
We can get along
Unless of course it’s cross-fit
In which case you are wrong
But scrabble round for long enough
You stumble on the truth
That there is nothing trivial
About having pursuits
It could be Rubik’s cubes, or..
Whatever people do who don’t do Rubik’s cubes
It could be.. Connect 4? Or..
I don’t know man, you do you.
These small things have an impact,
Sometimes it’s hard to know
But when pixels come together
then the pics’ll start to show.
And when we start, the chances are
That we will be completely terrible
But after a few well placed moves
It begins to make sense
We might seem messed up on the surface
Wishing life was more directional
But Left Up to our own devices,
We can be Down Right incredible.
On the face of it
some of us might love red, white and blue
Some of us prefer the edges -
green, yellow and orange too.
We all have our ‘thing’ we love
That nurtures us and nourishes
What if we don’t just acknowledge
one another's, but encourage it
Let’s not just put up with each other
But lift one another up
let’s not just tolerate but celebrate
that we’ve got different stuff
When we welcome others
It doesn’t mean there’s less room for us
For there is no such thing
As a finite amount of love
What makes our interests interesting
is all of them are different
What makes existence interesting
is all of us are different
The world’s a more interesting place
Cause all of us are in it
The fact that you are who you are’s
Nothing short of exquisite
Our brains are wired in different ways
Our bodies are not built the same
Our artwork comes in different frames
But frames are not what makes art great
Let’s celebrate when someone else
is absolutely smashing it
Put energy towards
being passionately compassionate
The list of things I care about
May be different to you
But lets extend those lists to
Include one another too.
Not just dutifully included
but intentionally embedded
No matter what your age or race,
gender or sexual preference
Let’s champion where we’re from,
and where we are,
And where we’re headed
Imagine if your pronouns were beloved and accepted
No matter who you are
Or what your interests might be
A world where all of us can thrive -
Now that’s something that interests me.

Thank You
I mean that sincerely: thank you for both taking the time to work out the puzzle, and then sit patiently waiting for the right time for the page to pop up. Not to mention the time to then scroll through and find this bit at the bottom.

If you did, let me know. Either tweet at me, or comment on my latest instagram post with your favourite superhero. No context. No explanation. Just your favourite superhero.

That way, you'll know that I know that you know...

Anyway, thanks again. I'll keep updating this page with any other nonsense I can think of. So check back occasionally!

All the best,
Tom, x
